South Korean actress and former pop star Hwang Jung-eum has avoided jail time after being convicted of embezzling company funds to fuel personal cryptocurrency investments. The Jeju District Court handed down a two-year suspended sentence and four years of probation, citing her lack of prior criminal record.
Prosecutors revealed Hwang siphoned 4.2 billion won ($3 million) from her own entertainment agency in 2022, diverting most into digital assets while also using company accounts to settle personal expenses. "I've never even been NEAR a police station before," a tearful Hwang told reporters after the verdict, marking a dramatic fall for the celebrity who once commanded Korea's entertainment industry.
